Hippo (a.k.a. Shirlyn) is a Northwest Emmy–nominated, award-winning producer and director who loves making things through collaboration and communication—and never turns down good New York pizza.
She began her career in television post-production, editing broadcast commercials for networks including HBO, Showtime, HGTV, and Time Warner Cable. She later earned an MFA in Film & TV Production from NYU Tisch School of the Arts Asia, where she wrote and directed short films that screened and won awards at festivals worldwide.
As Senior Producer at Apartment Therapy Media, Hippo produced editorial and branded content for Apartment Therapy and The Kitchn, spearheaded the brand’s TikTok strategy—tripling follower growth—and led the video team on Small/Cool, the company’s largest marketing campaign, which won a Digiday Award in 2022. She is currently a Senior Video Producer at Cascade PBS in Seattle. Her Northwest Emmy–nominated series, Out & Back with Alison Mariella Désir, highlights BIPOC changemakers in the outdoors—spaces where they have historically been marginalized.
She continues to write scripts and was a 2019 Sundance Lab co-fellow in the FilmTwo Initiative. Outside of work, Hippo is a birdwatching enthusiast and has a love of the outdoors.
